Art and Design

Our Intent for Art and Design at Abbot Alphege Academy

At Abbot Alphege Academy, we recognise the importance of Art and Design in the curriculum as it stimulates creativity and imagination. We aim to develop proficiency in drawing, painting, understanding colour and shade and sculpture. Children will have the opportunity to explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists and designers.

We aim to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to record from first-hand experience and from imagination and develop opportunities to select their own ideas for use in their work. We ensure that the children develop creativity and imagination through a range of complex activities by developing the ability to control materials, tools and techniques. The children will increase their critical awareness of the roles and purposes of art and design in different times and cultures and develop increasing confidence in the use of visual and tactile elements and materials. We aim to foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers.

We support our Art and Design curriculum with resources from the Kapow scheme, and many of our art and design units of work link closely to our Learning Themes.
