Our Intent for Geography at Abbot Alphege Academy
At Abbot Alphege Academy, our intention is to inspire children’s curiosity and fascination about the world in which we live and to ignite a love of learning. We intend to equip children with geographical skills to develop their knowledge by studying places and people, and natural and human environments. We aim to deepen understanding of the Earth’s human and physical forms and processes. Through our high-quality teaching, we intend our pupils to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, and to provoke thought and encourage children to question and discover through exploration and research.
Our Geography curriculum is supported by using the using the scheme; ‘Rising Stars: Geography’. Each topic within the Rising Star’s scheme has been carefully embedded into our whole school rolling cycle curriculum; linking with their learning questions and ensuring progression in learning outcomes and key technical vocabulary.
We want all children at Abbot Alphege Academy to leave with a deep understanding of the skills needed within the Geography curriculum. These skills include understanding geographical similarities and difference through studies of countries and continents (such as South America and the Alpine region), use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features in our local area using a range of methods, including sketch maps, plans and graphs and digital technologies.
At Abbot Alphege Academy, we also provide rich and engaging educational visits that enable further opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and showcase our beautiful local area; such as Stonehenge and Beckford Tower.
